Saturday, August 25, we got up early and picked up that rental. New Pontiac Grand Am. Only
12,939 km on it. (We'll fix that) First stop was "Heritage Park". Canada's
Largest Living Historical Village. We found out about it from a brochure in the Travelodge lobby. Free breakfast to all
vistors between 09:00 and 10:00. Can't pass that up. This place was so authentic even our pictures showed up in black and white. cool. |

Original Steam engine. The park had different sections from different era's (late 1800's, early 1900's). The train is kinda like the mono rail at the zoo. It circles the park, showing you all the sites, plus it also serves as a way to get from here to there. All of the buildings are orignal. They were moved to the site to create a real authentic town. |
|
Apparently we liked the train. |
|
But there were lots of buildings there too. Dentist offices, Hotels, Banks, and even a nice
pig barn. Here is Leanne admiring the pigs. |

For those of you who don't know, it is pretty clear where the mountains start when heading west
from Calgary. A few rolling foothills, then BOOM mountains as far as the eye can see. Sightseeing is in store for the afternoon. Our drive from Calgary to Banff was our first introduction to the real Canadian Rockies ! |
|
This is rancher country, with big wide open fields. |
|
A lake on our way. |
|
Ah, we have arrived at Banff. The scale of these mountains throws you a little at first. Featured below is the world famous Banff Golf Course. (that little patch of green is one of the holes) |
|
First stop, the Banff Hot Springs. It looks like a pool (unfortunately) but this water comes
from the side of the mountain. Many of the lakes in the rockies have underground river systems. This water happens to run so
deep the heat from the earths core warms it up. It then bubbles up to the surface at approx. 40°C ! It was this spring that started Canada's first National Park (Banff). It'd be nice to have a giant outdoor hot tub, heated naturally, overlooking the mountains. Even though our trip was just begining, it was nice to soak in the warm water. |
|
Our Campsite. Also a nice picture of the car. The V6 was roomy enough to be comfortable, yet sporty enough to pass going up these hills. A map light would have been nice though. We're glad we took our camping gear and could stay (cheaply) in the campgournds of the national parks. |
